Not your Grandma's: A Healthier Apple Crisp Recipe

Bless my Gram, she was forever on a diet. She's on my Italian side and they are big into food. The more butter, the better.

Her cooking was THE BEST. She made me home-made mac-n-cheese and used to let me eat pancakes and ice cream for dinner sometimes.

I'm sure she's the reason why I associate mealtime with family. We would crowd around her kitchen table waiting to devour the sauce and meatballs she spent the weekend cooking.

To this day, sitting down as a family is a top priority. No phones, no television. Just music, food, and my loves.

I was able to snag some of my Grandma's recipes, written in her scrawly handwriting. The amount of cream cheese, butter, and flour in recipes would astound you. No wonder she was always on a diet. She didn't need to be, she was so beautiful.

Life is about moderation. And sometimes you deserve to go nuts and eat that giant piece of cheesecake. I love how I feel when I eat healthy, homemade foods so that's what we do most of the time.

I've modified my Grandma's apple crip recipe (the original was rammed with lots of butter and sugar), so I can enjoy the memories with a more modern, healthy update.

This healthier apple crisp is a modern and healthy version of my Grandmother's apple crisp featuring quinoa flakes, coconut sugar, and oil.

Filling
 6 Granny Smith Apples, Peeled and Sliced
 ½ Lemon, Juiced
 ½ cup Coconut Sugar
 1 tbsp Cinnamon
Crisp Topping
 ½ cup Coconut Oil
 ½ cup Oatmeal
 ½ cup Quinoa Flakes
 ½ cup Brown Sugar or Coconut Sugar (Less if you don't want it too sweet)
 1 tbsp Cinnamon
 ½ tsp Nutmeg
 ¼ tsp Salt

Preheat Oven to 350F or 180C, then peel and slice apples.

In a large mixing bowl combine Apples, Lemon Juice and Coconut Sugar. Mix well with your hands.

In a greased baking pan, place apple mixture and smooth it out evenly.

In another bowl, mix dry ingredients together and layer evenly over apple mixture.

Melt Butter or Coconut Oil and drizzle over the top of your crisp evenly.

Bake for 45 minutes. Serve Warm or cold and add Vanilla Ice Cream for a treat.
