This fine art print was inspired by Melbourne.
I knew I wanted to incorporate Melbourne's natural wonders with its intricate and artistic city life. When researching for this piece, I looked at a lot of historical and modern maps, from Melbourne's city grid to tram lines to topography and navigation charts. Then I started thinking about how nature provides its own ‘maps' with ripples on the sea, lines in sand or veins in leaves.
As I migrated to Australia in my late 20s, I'm still learning about Native Flora and Fauna, which inspires a lot of my artwork. One day I realised that the native gum tree (where koalas hang out) leaf could be the perfect container for all of Melbourne's natural and man-made beauty.
Using the gum leaf as an organic, abstracted ‘map' and I could use the segments to showcase all the wonders of my adopted city. Within those leaf cells, I added abstractions of natural patterns, maps, city life, street art, and the beauty of a modern-day city on the sea.
